Manipulative Geometry

 ADVANTAGES OF MANIPULATIVE LEARNING

It is known that manipulative materials are a good option to introduce some contents of different subjects, in this case Geometry. Children use all their senses while learning, and visual input often help them understand some concepts even better than just listening to a lesson, items that can be touched and felt also help children adquire some knowledge better because they can manipulate the materials.

In this case, what I wanted to do is to cut different pieces representing geometric figures and flat poligons, by doing so, their elements can be easily identifyed; sides, vertices and angles by touching them with their fingers pointing at the vertices, following the perimeter and being in touch with the figures themselves.

I personally used this technique during my practices in a 3º course class, to introduce the Flat Geometry. I started by the triangles and its classification and then quadrangles and its classification too, I also had to explain the different parts of the figures and these materials really helped me doing so, my students could point at the different parts, touch the pieces and feel part of the lesson while learning.

DEVELOPING OF MULTIPLES INTELLIGENCES

The Theory of the Multiple Intelligences tell us how important it is to develop the different fields of knowledge in our classes during our lessons because there are mire types of intelligences aparte from Logic (mathematical) and Language (linguistic), and every student have a different mix of the 8 intelligences like: naturalistic, spatial, linguistic, logical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, musical and bodily.

Every mix is different and the is why we ahve to make sure that we foster them all during different moments of the lesson, so everyone can feel involved and also grow while learning, in this case visual and bodily is developed because of the input included in the activity.

EXAMPLES

These are my examples during my practicum period, children seem to love the idea because it got high rates of participation and motivation while I was explaining:
